Miami

To put it simply: Miami has a vibe. Diversity, debauchery, and decadence abound here… and it results in a melting pot like no other city in the United States. Miami is truly a place where anything (and everything) goes. And in recent years, it’s undergone an incredible transformation. So while you’re sure to still see your fair share of stereotypically spray-tanned and enhanced bodies grinding to the bass until the wee hours, I promise you’ll be pleasantly surprised to discover the many layers this city has to offer.

Miami is constantly reinventing itself. While it still has the Art Deco charm and steady Latin American pulse it’s always been known for, it has also become a veritable mecca for art, cuisine, culture, and all of life’s finer things. It’s a city of beautiful beaches… and even more beautiful people. And it is literally impossible not to have fun here. Because Miami has something for everyone.

Ditch the guidebooks and read on… ¡Bienvenidos a Miami!

Pro Tips

Getting there
Although you might automatically assume that Miami International Airport (MIA) would be your best bet for flying in, you’ll be better off landing in Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) if possible. Flights should run you about the same amount, and Fort Lauderdale is actually much quicker to move through and get a car from than Miami International. They’ll both take about the same amount of time to get to the city center, and you’ll save yourself some trouble.

Pack wisely
Miami calls for packing your favorite leave-nothing-to-the-imagination dresses and going-out attire, so be sure to utilize the extra suitcase room for extra layers and rain gear. Miami has a subtropical climate, which means that heat and humidity go hand in hand with flash storms (and floods!). So while the temp never really dips much colder than 70 degrees, the weather can be unpredictable. Pack a lightweight rain coat (bonus points if you can fold it up to fit in your purse!) and your days and nights will stay golden.

So. Much. FUN.
Every time I visit Miami, I somehow feel like I morph into my most fun self. It’s a city where fun rules all—at all hours. While going out to dinner in Los Angeles wearing my tightest and shortest dress might garner me some unwarranted disapproving looks, literally anything goes in Miami. Use this as your excuse to channel the city’s energy into wearing whatever makes you look and feel your best. Oh, and don’t be turned off by the subtropical humidity… your skin will thank you (hello, dewy complexion!).

Uber-bonus!
One of the things I was most shocked to find in Miami is the affordability of Ubers! Rides that would typically cost upwards of $35.00 in Los Angeles cost like $15.00 in Miami. So drink up… and enjoy the ride!

Where to Stay

Miami spans about 56 square miles, and is comprised of tons of different neighborhoods, from Little Havana to the Design District. But since the majority of the action takes place in South Beach / Downtown, these are (not-coincidentally) my favorite places to stay. Here’s a list of some of my top places to stay and recharge.

The W Miami

This sprawling hotel has everything you’d expect from a W resort… and is absolutely massive. A highlight is definitely their 28,000-square foot Ironbrickell Spa, which has a water lounge, fitness center, and steam room / sauna. The rooms are chic and modern with marble bathrooms. Try to snag a room with a private balcony overlooking downtown Miami. Their 15th floor terrace is a great place to grab a drink before hitting the town.

The Setai

The Setai is a luxurious, refined hotel with a refreshingly sophisticated feel. It’s located just steps from the white sand and turquoise waters, and their three infinity pools are all situated to capture the sunset perfectly. This place is pure bliss.

SoHo Beach House

If you’re a member, SoHo Beach House is an incredible spot to stay. It’s housed in a fully-restored historically Art Deco building (quintessential Miami) and also has an amazing club. Their 100 ft. pool is flanked by comfy lounge beds for when you need a break from the sun, and has full waiter service—including a “Fill Your Cooler” option and a late night Beachbar menu. It’s also home to the highly rated Cowshed Spa and Cecconi’s restaurant.

Four Seasons at the Surf Club

Located in the Surfside area of North Beach, The Four Seasons is all historic Miami glamour. Tire tycoon Harvey Firestone opened the hotel on New Years Eve in 1930, and it’s been an institution “dedicated to the sea, the sun, and all things social” ever since. It’s also home to the stunning Le Sirenuse and historic Surf Club restaurants (two of my favorites).

Faena

It doesn’t get much better than this. The Faena Hotel is a five-star luxury hotel situated right on the ocean. It definitely has an upscale artsy vibe, which can be really fun. The newly-opened Faena Bazaar is modeled after a traditional souk, but features a contemporary art gallery on the first floor followed by luxury shops and pop-ups on the second and third floors. Check out their fine jewelry lounge, complete with Gucci pink swan wallpaper.
Right across the street is Casa Faena, which is a less-expensive boutique hotel experience. Travel + Leisure described it perfectly: “charmingly and unpretentiously renovated… Casa Faena is a Spanish-style inn with an atrium that feels like a living room in the Hollywood Hills.”

1 Hotel

I love, love, love the clean and natural vibes of this hotel. It truly feels like an oasis in the middle of South Beach. Named the #1 hotel in Miami by Conde Nast Traveler’s 2019 Choice, 1 Hotel lives up to the hype. The rooms are gorgeous, modern, comfortable, and eco-friendly (each room even has its own water filter!). The hotel itself is even built entirely from reclaimed materials. A great place to stay if you are looking to green-ify your Miami trip.

Sixty80 Design Hotel

It’s not a full-service hotel, but rather a collection of modernly gorgeous suites and apartments. What it lacks in accoutrements like slippers, robes, and room service (don’t worry, there’s a Starbucks in the lobby), it totally makes up for in terms of functionality and livability. I stayed in a beautiful blue and white studio apartment and was surprisingly content without the trappings of a classic hotel. It’s everything you need—and nothing you don’t.

Palihouse Miami Beach

The Palihouse is located in what used to be the Greenbrier Hotel (established in 1940) and has all the Art Deco charm you’d expect from Miami. It offers residential-style rooms and studios, most of which have kitchenettes. They offer thoughtful touches that truly make your stay feel like home—from the Beach Butler service (which offers round-trip Moke transportation to Miami beach hot spots), to house bicycles and cooler lunches, this is a gem of a hotel.

Staying “Off-Campus”

If South Beach isn’t your vibe, consider Coconut Grove as a great option to stay—especially if you’re looking for a slightly slower pace and family-friendly atmosphere. Hugging the shoreline of Biscayne Bay, it’s an upscale, leafy neighborhood full of relaxed sidewalk cafes, smoothie bars (The Last Carrot is one of my faves), and chic shops. Coconut Grove is also home to the bay-front Barnacle State Park, a mangrove forest, the iconic Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and tons of sailing clubs (although most are membership-based, unfortunately). Not to mention, Coconut Grove has recently transformed itself from a collection of late-night bad decision bars to the city’s best new culinary destination with amazing eats (i.e. Glass & Vine and The Spillover). Keep in mind that Coconut Grove is about a 30 minute trek to South Beach, but is a great option if you’re looking to escape the “party” vibe. The Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove is a great hotel option here.

What to Do

While Miami can feel like (and basically, is) one giant party, there are some truly memorable ways to spend your daytime hours here. Whether it’s soaking up the rays or the culture, there’s never a lack of amazing activities to keep you busy and entertained. Here are few of my favorite ways to while away the hours:

Bring your SPF!
This one is a no-brainer, but soaking up the sun on South Beach or Miami Beach is a great way to spend an afternoon. Just beware of the rays… they’re powerful! Even on the occasional overcast day (or when the humidity kicks in) you can still get a killer sunburn (been there)! And from low cut one-pieces to barely there bikinis and thongs, it’s no surprise that anything goes on the beaches of Miami.

Visit the neighborhoods

Even if you’re not staying in South Beach, be sure to pay a visit to Ocean Drive. Known mostly for its oh-so-Miami Art Deco hotels, restaurants, and bars (including the Colony Hotel, its most famous landmark), it has everything you’d expect from Miami—and more.
Known for its many colorful murals, Wynwood is one of Miami’s hippest neighborhoods. Wynwood Walls is an outdoor museum with large-format works by some of the world’s best street artists. Not to mention, their chic clothing boutiques, stylish bistros, and late-night bars are some of the best in the city. Be sure to bring a fully charged phone… there will be many visuals to capture!
Full of sleek modern architecture, upscale interior design stores, hip galleries, luxury boutiques, and celebrity-chef restaurants, it’s a favorite haunt for Miami’s well-heeled crowd for good reason.
Filled to the brim with Latin American art galleries, bustling restaurants, and delicious Cuban food, no trip to Miami is complete with a stop in Little Havana for a Cuban sandwich or Cuban coffee (or both!).

Museums and culture

Get a dose of #culture before the party begins. If you’re staying in South Beach, the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is the perfect excuse to visit Coconut Grove! The former estate of businessman James Deering (of the Deering McCormick-International Harvester fortune) is open to the public and home to extensive Italian Renaissance gardens and the villa itself is to die for.

Events and excursions

If your itinerary timeline permits, other fun Miami activities include catching a concert (the Fillmore is a great smaller-sized venue), a Heat or Dolphins game, or a comedy show at the Olympia Theater.

Where to Shop

No guide to Miami would be complete without an emphasis on retail. Miami is one of my favorite places to go on a shopping spree, because there’s just so much of everything! A few of my favorite areas to shop include the Bal Harbour Shops (an open-air, luxury shopping oasis) and the Design District. Lincoln Road, which runs east to west across the width of Miami Beach, also boasts some amazing high-end storefronts, including the coveted Alchemist for men. Also, don’t miss The Webster, a three-story, high-end boutique in a sunlit Art Deco venue with a rooftop deck… so you can shop ‘til you drop (or at least need a drink).

Where to Eat

Miami feels like a melting pot in every imaginable way—it’s a city where the food, atmosphere, and vibe all come together. From high end institutions to the divey Cuban restaurant around the corner, it’s no surprise that Miami was recently rated as the number one city for foodies. Here are a few of my favorite places to get a bite, at any time of the day (or night):

Joe’s Stone Crab

This is the ultimate Miami institution, and absolutely worth a visit for their world-famous (you guessed it) stone crab. Unlike dungeness crab, you only eat the claws of stone crabs. They are decadent and sweet and delicious, especially when dipped in melted butter. So while the claws tend to steal the show at Joe’s, the famous fried chicken (for just $6.95!) is a sleeper hit. Other amazing options include the chopped salad, lobster bisque and onion rings. For a more casual option, check out Joe’s Take Away, which offers different menu options you can pick up before grabbing a seat at a table or at the bar.

Pura Vida Miami

Health meets happiness at this stylish, casual restaurant. With a focus on organic and local ingredients, It’s perfect for a healthy breakfast, lunch, or snack. Their signature acai bowls were voted Best in Miami, and their Supergreens smoothie is the ultimate hangover cure. And who can say no to an all-day breakfast menu?

Carpaccio

This bustling cafe at the Bal Harbor shops serves up classic Italian fare to a hungry “see-and-be-seen” crowd. Their outdoor terrace is amazing on a not-too-humid day / evening. They offer a lighter lunch menu as well as a heartier, classic Italian dinner menu (their Linguine Nettuno is perfetto, especially when paired with a crisp Chardonnay.)

Mandolin Aegean Bistro

Located in the hip Design District, this local gem specializes in unpretentious Greek and Turkish food prepared with the freshest ingredients. This is a place the guidebooks may not mention, but it’s a favorite among Miami locals. As soon as you enter the Mandolin’s blue gates, you’ll forget you’re in Florida and not the Mediterranean.

Cecconi’s

Located in the courtyard of the SoHo Beach House, I love this Cecconi’s even more than the West Hollywood location. The indoor / outdoor setting could not be more stunning. The handmade pasta is just as delicious as you’d expect, and their branzino with spinach, tomato, and olives is a perfect light meal before a night of imbibing.

Estiatorio Milos

Located in the South of Fifth district, but well-worth the trek—after all, it’s recognized as one of the finest Mediterranean seafood restaurants in the world. A few of my favorite menu items include the grilled octopus, grilled fish (simple and delicious), Milo’s zucchini chips, and Greek salad (the best ever). Be sure to save room for the baklava and baklava ice cream for dessert!

Mr Chow

Located in The W Hotel, this is literally my favorite Mr Chow. From the food, the service, the ambiance, and the vibe—it all comes together seamlessly and makes for a truly unforgettable experience. I never take a Miami trip without making a reservation here.

Gitano at Casa Faena

Take a culinary trip to Tulum without leaving Miami. The food (and drinks) here are just so good. Come for the tropical vibes, groove to the hypnotic gypsy-disco beats, and soak up the light, clean Mexican flavors. My favorite menu items include the tuna tostada, coconut ceviche, shrimp tacos, carne asada, and (of course), the guacamole with crudité! Be sure to start your order off with a Jungle Fever—a drink made with mezcal, cilantro, chili, and lime.

Casa Tua

A stark contrast to South Beach’s Art Deco-heavy architecture, Casa Tua is a refreshing breath of fresh (Mediterranean) air. Originally built in 1925 as a private residence, the space has since been transformed into a luxurious yet cozy traditional Northern Italian eatery. Grab a table in the library, on the lantern-lit garden, private dining upstairs, or at the coveted 20-seat Chef’s Table with view of the kitchen. This place is all about understated elegance.

Surf Club Restaurant

Another one of Chef Thomas Keller’s masterpieces, located at the Four Seasons. Specializing in Continental cuisine with a French flair, their Dover sole meunière and mushroom lasagna are simply amazing. Don’t miss their fancy French onion dip with kettle chips, delicious stone crab cakes, and hand-cut steak tartare. Come hungry… you’re bound to leave (pleasantly) stuffed.

The Palm

What’s not to love about The Palm, especially when you’re in Miami? It’s pretty much required that you start your meal with an ice-cold martini while you take in the intimate, wooden interior that feels almost like a private club. It’s tough to decide between the giant lobsters and melt-in-your-mouth steak—but don’t worry, that’s why they invented Surf n’ Turf.

A few other notable Miami cuisine genres (because it’s impossible for me to pick just one):

Sushi

Makoto

A sleek, elegant restaurant located at the Bal Harbour shops that specializes in modern, upscale Japanese entrees and sushi.

Zuma

Their sushi-centric flagship opened in London in 2002, and Zuma now has eleven locations around the globe. People love it—and for good reason.

Kyu

A wood-fired, Asian-inspired restaurant with amazing cocktails. Try the pork and shiitake gyoza with smoked truffle ponzu (you can thank me later).

Sushi by Bou

If you have the means and connections to experience this elite sushi experience at the Versace mansion, DO IT. 60 minutes, 17 courses. It is everything. Runs about $125 per person, and worth every single penny.

Local Favorites

La Sandwicherie

This dive-y looking sandwich shop is a local gem. It’s open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 AM, which makes it the perfect post-club spot. Be sure to get a side of the vinaigrette (aka “magic sauce”).
pizza

Both Lucali’s and Mister 01’s are amazing for pizza. Because sometimes you just need a slice. This is where the locals go for the best pizzas in Miami.

Prime Group
The Myles restaurant group three Prime restaurants in Miami. All of them specialize in top quality ingredients and are a sure-fire bet for a well-worth-your-money dinner.

Prime 112

Everything you’d want from a traditional steakhouse, with a refreshingly modern twist. Unassuming from the front, but decidedly sexy inside. Be sure to start with the Truffle Provolone Fondue for the table!

Prime Italian

Come hungry! Prime Italian specializes in oversized shared portions in an upscale dining experience. They made a name for themselves with their one pound Kobe meatball… enough said.

Prime Fish

Consider this your ultimate “fish shack-meets-up-scale-dining” experience. Seafood (obviously) is a specialty, but a side of Truffled Mac n’ Cheese never hurt anyone. Amirite?

Dave Grutman spots
Dave Grutman is the unofficial king of South Beach nightlife and is a hospitality icon—his restaurants are no exception. Be sure to consider visiting at least one (if not all) of his standout dining spots:

Swan

Insider tip: Modern European fare with decor to die for. Be sure to bring a camera or a fully-charged phone. This place is insanely Insta-friendly. So much #MiamiChic.

Papi Steak

One word: luxe. This place is insanely South Beach-sexy inside, with the prime cuts to back it up. The bar itself is worth a trip alone, even if you can’t snag a res.

Planta

Environmental sustainability that’s also out-of-this-world delicious? Check please. No animal products, ultimate taste. Perfect for your post-party recovery day of health and wellness.

Komodo

An indoor / outdoor eatery and lounge that serves up contemporary, high-end southeast Asian fare. Try their King Crab Garlic Noodles, Peking Duck, and Grutman’s Pastrami Egg Roll (it oddly works!). Their chocolate nutty bar is also one of my favorite desserts in town!

Cuban Sabor
You absolutely cannot visit Miami without indulging in some of the best Cuban food you’ll find outside of… well, Cuba. But thanks to its proximity and native influence, one of my very favorite parts about visiting Miami is getting off-the-grid and experiencing some real Cuban culture. A few must-tries:

Puerto Sagua

Since 1962, this South Beach staple has been delighting tastebuds with Cuban comfort-food staples like the Cubanos and Ropa Vieja. No pretense, no frills. All flavor.

Versailles

The self-proclaimed “unofficial town square for Miami’s Cuban exiles.” This is literally the hub for Miami Cuban food and culture. It’s not unlikely you’ll see a local Cuban news network outside interviewing someone about the current political landscape.

Cafe La Trova

Miami’s go-to upscale Cuban spot. James Beard Award-winning chef Michelle Bernstein and husband David Martinez do old-Cuba style in Little Havana—with a heavy dose of Miami glam. Explore their cocktail menu and toast to their famed Hotel Nacional (rum, apricot liqueur, pineapple and lime).

Dine and Dance
One of the city’s best-kept anomalies is the concept of a DINNER CLUB. While I’d be hard pressed to eat at the same place where I party in Los Angeles, this is literally your ultimate answer to nightlife in Miami. Eat dinner. Stay and party. Here are two places I think do it best:

Mandrake

Secured for private and social events, if you get an invitation to Mandrake, absolutely make an appearance. It has an other-worldly French-Indochine vibe that feels oh-so-Miami luxe. And the food (and cocktails!) never disappoint. Have a lavish dinner, let them clear the table, and get clubbing!

Bodega Taqueria y Tequila

Traditional Mexican food with a locally-inspired twist… not to mention delicious tequila and mezcal cocktails. Enter through the Port-o-Potty or meat locker door (yes, really!), and soak up the 2,500 square foot speakeasy cocktail lounge. And the food is muy bueno to boot.

Where to Play

Daytime
While Miami is all about the nightlife, don’t dismiss the daytime scene (hangover be damned). A few Miami day party spots worth a visit are:

Seaspice

A super chic spot with an outdoor patio, globally-influenced food, and a great playlist to take you from AM to PM. Set in a post-industrial warehouse with stunning views of the Miami river, Seascape offers specialty cocktails and inspired cuisine that will make the hours fly by. Take in the Florida sunset while sharing a sparkling sangria pitcher with friends.

Kiki on the River

Mykonos-meets-Miami at this live-DJ party place. But don’t let the description fool you—Kiki exudes South Beach elegance. Their waterfront dining atmosphere features a festive Greek soundtrack (cue the twirling napkins and “Opa!” callouts).

AM or PM
Come day or come night, Miami bars are a dime a dozen. But the cream rises to the top. Here are a few of my favorite places to imbibe, anytime:

SoHo Beach House

If you’re a member, or simply know a member to put your name down, enjoy your perks in Miami at this amazing bar scene of see-and-be-seen. Top-notch atmosphere and cocktails.

Living Room at Faena

Described as  “well-appointed gathering space,” the Living Room offers delicious small plates (also available late-night), bespoke cocktails, and an extensive wine list... Plus live entertainment! Their luxe Palm Beach-esque interior feels less like a club and more like a… well, living room. Sit back and enjoy.

Gitano Rooftop

From 4:30 PM onwards, enjoy “golden hour:" cocktail specials with a spectacular view of the Miami seascape with a Mexican flair (hello, Tulum!).

Basement

Located at the Edition hotel, Basement takes play to the next level. A self-proclaimed “multidimensional entertainment hub,” you have the ability to choose your adventure—from nightclubbing, to bowling, to ice-skating—all outfitted with a state-of-the-art soundsystem and world-class DJs and lighting systems.

Socialista

A Carribean-inspired hotspot in the Brickell neighborhood of downtown Miami, just steps from Cipriani. Chinoiserie accents meet 20th century glam-modernism, with a hearty dose of tropical flavor. Socialista has it all, and is definitely worth a visit.

Late Night
In Miami, the club scene starts late (around 1:00 AM) and goes even later (until 4:00 or 5:00 AM). So make sure your hotel has a comfy bed for sleeping in—you might need it! Here are a few of my favorite late-night haunts. Just beware of the blinding sunlight when you (finally) emerge.

Wall Lounge

A solid club to start your night off at, especially if you just had dinner at Mr Chow (it’s right across The W lobby). This place echoes with the oonz-oonz you’d expect from Miami club… and it keeps going all night.

LIV

This is the premiere the long-standing Miami “maga-club.” Headlining world-class DJs and performers, there’s never a dull moment. From Tieso to Diddy, LIV packs in the crowd-pleasers (and celebs). Grab a private table if you want to avoid the jostling elbows at the bar.

Rockwell

The perfect storm of LA-cool, New York music, and Miami chic, Rockwell is an eye-candy-friendly nightlife destination. Another spot that pays to snag a private table—this place packs in the party.

Story

One of the city’s largest clubs at 27,000 square feet, Story is another Miami megaclub that’s worth a visit. The circus-style setting changes nightly, and is a production in and of itself. Frontlining DJs pack in the crowds.

E11even

Miami’s favorite 24-hour nightclub… this place literally never closes. Between the world-class sound and lighting systems and entertainment, Ele11ven unsurprisingly even gets the Tiesto stamp of approval. Although sometimes referred to as a stripclub, E11even is actually just a nightclub with strippers (there is a difference!).

Club Space

Another forget-what-time-it-is Miami 24-hour club. Disco meets tropics with an intense sound system that will leave your eardrums thrumming.

Events

In the past half decade, Miami has undergone an undeniable transformation. While the rowdy club scene is still alive and well, the city has cultivated a more highbrow appeal—in large part thanks to the influx of art and music festivals, which draw worldwide appeal. While Miami’s main art shows and festivals command a crowd (and hotel prices to match), consider timing your visit with the following, should you be so inclined:

This annual art show in December (with counterparts in Hong Kong and Switzerland) draws worldwide art talent unlike anything else in the US. From well-known works from the likes of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichenstein to emerging contemporary artists, get your fill of culture while rubbing shoulders with the artistic elite before heading to the epic afterparties.
Established in 1985, this week-long electronic music festival is held in Miami every year in March. It’s known as the premiere platform for emerging electronic dance music and draws an eclectic-yet-highbrow crowd.
Note: People often confuse WMC (Winter Music Conference) for Ultra Music Festival. Though they occur around the same time, they couldn't be more different. WMC is a week of industry events and more intimate parties with top-shelf artists and Ultra Music Festival is a mega, multi-day, over-the-top, EDM festival featuring a ton of emerging DJs on a gazillion outdoor stages. Consider yourself warned!
The largest hip-hop music festival in the world! Every May, the best talent (think Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Post Malone, and A$AP Rocky) come together for an epic weekend event.  Just be sure to purchase tickets well in advance—and book your hotels and restaurant reservations, too. This is one event it definitely pays to do some advance planning for.
